چکیده

Osteocytes are the basic bone cells and are located in lacunae inside the bone matrix. Each osteocyte is connected to its neighbours through tiny channels (canaliculi) with a diameter of less than a micrometer. This osteocyte network plays an important role in mechanically induced adaptive bone remodeling, whereby the individual osteocytes work as mechano-sensors to detect states of local underor overloading.

Decrease in the osteocyte lacunar density accompanied by hypermineralized lacunar occlusion reveals failure and delay of remodeling in aged human bone.

Aging decreases the human femur's fatigue resistance, impact energy absorption, and the ability to withstand load. Changes in the osteocyte distribution and in their elemental composition might be involved in age-related bone impairment. To address this question, we carried out a histomorphometric assessment of the osteocyte lacunar distribution in the periosteal and endosteal human femoral cor...

3D osteocyte lacunar morphometric properties and distributions in human femoral cortical bone using synchrotron radiation micro-CT images.

Osteocytes, the most numerous bone cells, are thought to be actively involved in the bone modeling and remodeling processes. The morphology of osteocyte is hypothesized to adapt according to the physiological mechanical loading. Three-dimensional micro-CT has recently been used to study osteocyte lacunae. In this work, we proposed a computationally efficient and validated automated image analys...

0702 - Age-dependence of Osteocyte Lacunar Density Is Sexually Dimorphic in Human Vertebral Cancellous Bone

INTRODUCTION Human vertebral cancellous bone is one of the primary sites for age-related bone loss. In aging females bone loss occurs due to an increased rate of resorption while in males, bone loss results from a decline in bone formation rate (1). This sexual dimorphism in the mechanism of bone loss may be a consequence of the changes in endocrine, paracrine and autocrine factors which regula...

Osteocyte density changes in aging and osteoporosis.

Recently, it was suggested that osteocytes are involved in the regulation of bone remodeling. We have examined human trabecular bone of the iliac crest of fracture patients and control subjects to determine if osteoporosis is associated with changes in osteocyte density or osteocyte death. The relationships of these parameters with age was also investigated. It was found that osteocyte death wa...

Potential Risk of Asymptomatic Osteomyelitis around Mandibular Third Molar Tooth for Aged People: A Computed Tomography and Histopathologic Study

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between bone mineral density and histopathological features of mandibular alveolar bone evaluated quantitatively by Hounsfield units [HU] and by histopathology in human subjects. Fifty-six mandibular molars were extracted in 50 patients. Computed tomography was obtained preoperatively, and a cortical bone biopsy was obtained on the extra...
